A Strategy Blog

There’s very little discussion of strategy research on the web.  In particular, there seemingly aren’t many group blogs dedicated to strategy research and related issues (except O&M, and orgtheory.net has certainly also featured many strategy posts).

So, the goal of this blog, strategyprofs.net, is to bring a whole new set of scholars, practitioners and conversations onto the web.  We hope to touch on key issues related to organizational performance and competitive advantage – well, and whatever else happens to interest us.  While some of the posts are likely to be research-focused, nonetheless we also hope to attract strategy practitioners into the conversation.

You can learn more about any of us by clicking on our name on the sidebar.  While we are all interested in strategy, we are a rather heterogeneous group in terms of research interests, methods, opinions etc.  This heterogeneity will hopefully be one of the strengths of the blog.

Caveats and disclaimers: This blog represents the authors’ own respective views rather than those of any group that we might be affiliated with (university, department, association etc).  Also, the authors will not review each other’s posts before they are published here, we may in fact disagree on many topics (which is part of the fun), and thus our respective posts represent our own views.

    Congrats on the new blog, look forward to keeping up. I guess we at O&M didn’t pay enough attention to the entry-deterrence literature!

    Peter: we believe in enlarging the pie, cooperation, community and such around here. Competition and boundaries mean nothing to us. ;) We’ll be linking to O&M frequently.

  3. Always interested in new ideas… And a fan of OrgTheory for about three years now. So, I added this to my Favorites. But I am only nibbling at the bait. I have not taken the hook.

    After Strategy, do we study Tactics? Do we study Motives (Goals; Values) before Strategy? Strategy is how to fight battles in order to win a war. Is business war, a zero-sum game?

    Reading the post you pointed to by @mdryal on OrgTheory (September 29, 2011 at 7:45 pm), provided more to reflect on. That work said:

This was the 90s and, for those who are not aware of it, the methodological advances in economics were really expanding at that time: game theoretic learning, evolutionary economics, behavioral economics, computational methods … cool technological approaches that held some promise in tackling the complexities inherent in the strategy problem domain.

    “The central question in strategy is who gets what, why and for how long. IO economists, IO being in many ways a mirror field, are interested in how the most value gets created. The dichotomy is one between distributional vs. efficiency issues. We want to tell Apple how to make more profit. They want to tell the FTC how to increase social welfare.”

    Our comrades at Organizations & Markets would question whether the FTC can increase social welfare. In science – if this is a science – we have experiments to test theories. The economic collapse that started with the Dot.Com Meltdown, was accelerated by 9/11 and the resultant wars, and was capped by the collapse of the mortgage markets, would seem to be an ideal laboratory for the efficacy of these theories. Did the engagement of econometric game theoretic behaviorial technologies save any firms from suffering losses (including the loss of existence) in the last ten years?

    Where did Strategy Theory tell Steve Jobs about the iPod?

    What I am asking is: What is the substantive subject? What is strategy?
